Ma’estran Baila

Ininan Mariånas came into fruition from my parents yearning to perpetuate the Chamoru culture in Texas since we moved here in 20l6. If it weren’t for their dreams, I wouldn’t be where I am today as a CHamoru practitioner. Ininan Mariånas unconsciously changed my perspective on how I view myself as CHamoru woman and I am so beyond thankful for that.

My journey has led me to be in a position as a Ma’estra (teacher) of CHamoru dance. As this position holds so many responsibilities - my biggest responsibility is to ensure that Ininan Mariånas is and will always be a home, for people who felt like they couldn’t be themselves and just want to be in a place where they won’t feel judged for their learning setbacks, the way they speak or the clothes they wear, a safe space for CHamoru people to feel like they belong.
